Total internal reflection occurs when light going from a denser to a rarer medium strikes the interface at an angle greater than the critical angle, and is entirely reflected back with no refraction.

When light travels from an optically denser medium (refractive index n1n_1) to a rarer medium (refractive index n2<n1n_2 < n_1), it bends away from the normal on refraction, so the angle of refraction is greater than the angle of incidence. As the angle of incidence is increased, the angle of refraction approaches 90°.

The angle of incidence at which the refracted ray just grazes along the interface (angle of refraction = 90°) is called the critical angle, θc\theta_c, given by sin⁡θc=n2/n1\sin\theta_c = n_2/n_1.
