The refractive index and critical angle are related by μ = 1/sin C; with C = 30°, μ = 2.

When light travels from a denser medium into a rarer medium (e.g. glass to air), the critical angle C is the angle of incidence (in the denser medium) for which the angle of refraction is exactly 90°.

Applying Snell's law at the critical angle:

μ sin C = 1 × sin 90°

μ sin C = 1

μ = 1/sin C

Given C = 30°, and sin 30° = 1/2:

μ = 1/(1/2) = 2
