Almost every organised activity around us stores records and asks questions of them — contacts on a phone, library catalogues, school results, shop inventories, bank accounts, ticket reservations. Each of these is exactly "a table + a query": data kept once, then filtered on demand with something equivalent to a SELECT ... WHERE ....

Everyday situations that are really "database + query"

Daily-life situationWhat is storedA question we ask of it (the query)
Phone contact listName, phone number"All contacts starting with A"
School officeStudents, marks, attendance"Who scored above 90 in IP?"
LibraryBooks, authors, availability"Which books by R.K. Narayan are available?"
Kirana shop / e-commerceProducts, price, stock"Which items are out of stock?"
Bank / ATMAccounts, balances, transactions"What is my balance? Last 5 transactions?"
Railway / airline reservationTrains, seats, bookings"Seats free on train 12628 on 15 Aug?"
HospitalPatients, visits, prescriptions"Full history of patient P-1042"

In every case the benefit is the same: the data is stored once, without duplication, stays consistent, and any question can be answered instantly by a query instead of a manual search through registers.

One example made concrete — the school library

CREATE TABLE LIBRARY (
    BookID    INT PRIMARY KEY,
    Title     VARCHAR(50),
    Author    VARCHAR(30),
    Available CHAR(1)        -- 'Y' = on shelf, 'N' = issued
);

INSERT INTO LIBRARY VALUES
(1, 'Malgudi Days',        'R.K. Narayan',   'Y'),
(2, 'The Guide',           'R.K. Narayan',   'N'),
(3, 'Wings of Fire',       'A.P.J. Kalam',   'Y'),
(4, 'Godan',               'Premchand',      'Y');

The librarian's daily question, as one line of SQL:

SELECT Title, Author
FROM LIBRARY
WHERE Available = 'Y';

| Title | Author | …
