Mission and Role of the International Olympic Committee
As per the Olympic Charter, the mission of the IOC is to promote Olympism throughout the world and to lead the Olympic Movement.
The role of the IOC
The Olympic Charter sets out the IOC's role. Its main responsibilities are:
- to promote ethics, good governance and the education of youth through sport, and to ensure that the spirit of fair play prevails and violence is banned;
- to encourage and support the organisation, development and coordination of sport and sports competitions;
- to ensure the regular celebration of the Olympic Games;
- to cooperate with public and private organisations to place sport at the service of humanity and so promote peace;
- to strengthen the unity of the Movement, protect its independence, maintain its political neutrality and preserve the autonomy of sport;
- to act against any form of discrimination affecting the Movement;
- to support the representation of athletes within the Movement through the IOC Athletes' Commission;
- to promote women in sport at all levels and implement the principle of equality of men and women;
- to protect clean athletes and the integrity of sport by leading the fight against doping and against the manipulation of competitions;
- to support measures for the medical care and health of athletes;
- to oppose any political or commercial abuse of sport and athletes;
- to support the social and professional future of athletes;
- to encourage the development of sport for all;
- to support environmental responsibility and sustainable development in sport;
- to promote a positive legacy from the Games for host cities and countries;
