The rings. The Olympic symbol is five interlocked rings of equal size, in blue, yellow, black, green and red, with blue, black and red on top and yellow and green below. They reflect the union of the five continents — North & South America, Africa, Asia, Australia and Europe — and symbolise the unity of sportspersons from every continent at the Games.
The colours. Coubertin explained in 1931 that the design is symbolic for exactly this reason: together with the white background, the six colours are "those that appear on all the national flags of the world," so every competing nation can see at least one of its own flag's colours reflected in the Olympic flag.
The motto. "Citius – Altius – Fortius" is Latin for "Faster – Higher – Stronger," proposed by Coubertin in 1894 and first announced at the 1924 Paris Games — it expresses the Movement's aspiration to sporting excellence. …
