Olympism is a philosophy of life that combines and balances the qualities of body, will and mind. It puts sport at the service of the harmonious development of the human being, blending physical activity with culture and education, in order to promote a peaceful society concerned with the preservation of human dignity.
The Olympic Movement teaches values through sport and not only competition for several reasons:
- Its real purpose is human development. The founder's vision was to build better, more balanced people and a more peaceful world — sport is the means, not the end.
- Values are best learned by doing. On the field a child directly experiences effort, honesty, teamwork and respect, so games become a living classroom for excellence, friendship, respect and fair play.
- Winning alone is hollow. If the Games only crowned winners they would teach nothing lasting; by attaching lessons to play, the Movement leaves every participant — not just the medallists — enriched. …
