From a single religious foot race in 776 BCE to an 18-event, five-day festival, the Ancient Olympics ran for over a thousand years before corruption led to their abolition in 393/394 AD.

Origin. The Ancient Olympic Games were organised in honour of Zeus, the ruler of the Greek gods, as part of a religious festival at Olympia (named after Mount Olympus), beginning in 776 BCE. The only event at first was the foot race; sprints in armour, chariot racing, boxing and wrestling were added over the following centuries, eventually reaching 18 events spread across five days.

Eligibility and conduct. Only free male citizens of Greek city-states could compete, after 10 months of training; women were barred even from watching. The Games were held every four years (an Olympiad), during a sacred truce month in which all wars and disputes stopped to let athletes and spectators travel safely. …
