3.1.2 — Extension Activity

Q.Discuss with your group: What are the short-term effects of yoga? What changes take place in your body if you do yoga regularly over an extended period of time? Are these changes obvious (e.g. building up of muscles, loss of body fat) or not so obvious (e.g. increased stamina, improved flexibility)? What changes occur in heart rate and breathing? Design a poster to show the effect of yoga on the body — you could use an outline of the body to show which parts are affected, what those effects are, and how to maximize the benefits of exercise.

Yoga's short-term effects show up in breathing and heart rate almost immediately; its long-term effects include both visible changes (posture, muscle tone) and less visible ones (stamina, flexibility, focus) — a poster should map both kinds onto the body.

Short-term effects: within a single session, yoga slows the breath and heart rate and activates the parasympathetic nervous system, which is exactly what the textbook credits for yoga's stress- and tension-reducing effect.

Long-term effects, obvious: the textbook notes yoga's balanced physical development compared to exercises like aerobics — over an extended period this shows up as improved posture, toned muscles and reduced body fat, all visibly noticeable.

Long-term effects, not so obvious: increased self-awareness, enhanced personal power, better attention/focus/concentration, and the removal of "negative blocks from the mind and toxins from the body" that the textbook lists as benefits of regular yogic exercise — these matter just as much but don't show up by looking in a mirror. …
