- Neural coordination Coordination is the working-together of the body's organs, their activities adjusted and integrated for a common purpose. In animals this is achieved by two systems, and the neural system is the fast one. It provides an organised network of point-to-point connections between the sense organs, the processing centres and the effector organs, and because messages travel along these connections as electrical impulses, it delivers quick and precise coordination. This contrasts with the endocrine system, whose chemical coordination through hormones carried in the blood is slower and more diffuse.
- Forebrain The forebrain is the largest and most elaborate division of the brain, built from three parts. The cerebrum is the major part, split lengthwise into two hemispheres joined by the corpus callosum and covered by the folded cerebral cortex (grey matter) with motor, sensory and association areas. The thalamus, around which the cerebrum wraps, relays and integrates sensory and motor signals. The hypothalamus, at the base of the thalamus, regulates body temperature and the urges to eat and drink and secretes hypothalamic hormones. Deep-lying structures such as the amygdala and hippocampus form the limbic system, involved in smell, sexual behaviour, emotion and motivation.
- Midbrain The midbrain is the short middle division, lying between the thalamus–hypothalamus region above and the pons below. A narrow canal, the cerebral aqueduct, runs through it, and on its dorsal surface it bears four rounded swellings called the corpora quadrigemina. With the pons and medulla it forms part of the brainstem.
