The Earth moves faster at perihelion (closest approach to the Sun) than at aphelion (farthest point) because angular momentum is conserved — as the orbital radius decreases, the tangential speed must increase to keep the product mvrm v r constant.

The key to this question is conservation of angular momentum. In the absence of external torque, the angular momentum of a body in orbit remains constant. For the Earth–Sun system, the gravitational force is central (always directed toward the Sun), so it exerts zero torque about the Sun. That means the Earth’s angular momentum about the Sun does not change as it moves along its elliptical orbit.

  1. Angular momentum in orbit For a planet of mass mm moving with speed vv at a distance rr from the Sun, the magnitude of its orbital angular momentum (taking the Sun as the reference point) is

L=mvrsin⁡θL = m v r \sin\theta

where θ\theta is the angle between the velocity vector and the radius vector. At the two special points — aphelion (farthest from the Sun) and perihelion (closest) — the velocity is perpendicular to the radius vector, so sin⁡θ=1\sin\theta = 1. Hence at those points:

L=mvrL = m v r

  1. Conservation of LL Since LL is constant, we have

mvperirperi=mvaprapm v_{\text{peri}} r_{\text{peri}} = m v_{\text{ap}} r_{\text{ap}}

Cancelling mm:

vperirperi=vaprapv_{\text{peri}} r_{\text{peri}} = v_{\text{ap}} r_{\text{ap}}

  1. Relating speed and distance Rearranging:

vperi=vap⋅raprperiv_{\text{peri}} = v_{\text{ap}} \cdot \frac{r_{\text{ap}}}{r_{\text{peri}}}

Because rap>rperir_{\text{ap}} > r_{\text{peri}} (aphelion is farther), the ratio raprperi>1\frac{r_{\text{ap}}}{r_{\text{peri}}} > 1. Therefore vperi>vapv_{\text{peri}} > v_{\text{ap}}.

Tip

A quick way to remember: "Closer means faster" — just like a figure skater pulling in their arms spins faster. The same physics governs planetary motion.
