Ch 3Motion in a Plane — Class 11 Physics, concept-first.

3.1

Introduction

In the previous chapter, we described motion along a straight line — one dimension. There, direction was simple: forward or backward, captured by a plus or minus sign. But the world is not a line.

3.2

Scalars and Vectors

Physics deals with quantities that describe the world around us. Some of these quantities are completely described by a single number — their magnitude — along with the appropriate unit.

3.2.1

Position and Displacement Vectors

In the study of motion in a plane, we need a way to describe where an object is and how its location changes. Two vectors serve this purpose: the position vector and the displacement vector.

3.2.2

Equality of Vectors

Two vectors are said to be equal only when they have the same magnitude and the same direction. This is a stricter condition than equality of numbers.

3.3

Multiplication of Vectors by Real Numbers

When you multiply a vector by a real number (a scalar), you are scaling it. The result is a new vector whose magnitude is the original magnitude multiplied by the absolute value of that number.

3.4

Addition and Subtraction of Vectors — Graphical Method

When you first learn to add vectors, the algebraic approach (using components) can feel abstract. The graphical method gives you a physical, visual feel for what vector addition actually means.

3.5

Resolution of Vectors

A single vector can represent a physical quantity like displacement, force, or velocity. But in most real problems — a ball thrown at an angle, a block sliding down an incline — the effect of that vec…

3.6

Vector Addition – Analytical Method

2 Q

The graphical method of vector addition, while visually clear, becomes impractical when vectors are not perpendicular or when high precision is required.

3.7

Motion in a Plane

When a particle moves in two dimensions — along a curved path on a flat surface, for instance — we say it is in planar motion.

3.7.1

Position Vector and Displacement

To describe motion in a plane, you need two coordinates — unlike motion along a straight line, where one coordinate suffices. The natural tool for this job is the position vector.

3.8

Motion in a Plane with Constant Acceleration

When acceleration is constant, the motion in a plane becomes beautifully simple. The key idea is that the two perpendicular components of motion — along the x‑axis and the y‑axis — are completely inde…

3.9

Projectile Motion

3 Q

When an object is thrown or projected into the air and continues in flight under the influence of gravity alone, it is called a projectile.

3.10

Uniform Circular Motion

When an object moves along a circular path at a constant speed, we call this uniform circular motion. The word "uniform" here refers strictly to the speed — the magnitude of the velocity does not chan…

Summary

1. A scalar quantity has magnitude only — distance, speed, mass, and temperature are all scalars. A vector quantity has both magnitude and direction — displacement, velocity, and acceleration are exam…

Points to Ponder

1. The distance an object travels along its path between two points is usually larger than the straight-line distance between those points (the magnitude of displacement).
