Of the listed postural deformities, Bow Legs (Genu Varum), Flat Foot (Pes Planus) and Kyphosis (Hunch Back) are explained here. Bow Legs is caused mainly by a Vitamin D/Calcium/Phosphorus deficiency and corrected through a balanced diet and walking on the inner edge of the feet. Flat Foot is caused mainly by weak foot muscles, poor footwear and obesity, and corrected through toe/heel walking drills, skipping, marble pick-up and the asanas Adhomukhsavasana and Vajrasana. Kyphosis is caused mainly by heredity, disease and weak back muscles, and corrected through back-strengthening exercises, swimming and the asanas Dhanurasana, Chakrasana and Bhujangasana.

Bow Legs (Genu Varum)

Bow Legs is a deformity in which the knees curve outward while the ankles/feet touch when standing, giving the legs a bow-like shape.

Causes: a lack of Vitamin D, Phosphorus and Calcium is the leading cause; it may also be linked to Blount's disease or arthritis. It is common in infants and toddlers and usually resolves by age 3-4 without treatment; it does not interfere with running, standing or crawling, though it may cause a pigeon-toed walk.

Corrective measures: a balanced diet rich in Vitamin D, calcium and phosphorus; walking on the inner edge of the feet; modified shoes; and braces in more persistent cases.

Flat Foot (Pes Planus)

Flat Foot is a deformity in which the medial longitudinal arch of the foot is absent or very low, so the whole sole touches the ground on standing.

Causes: genetic and environmental factors, injury, improper footwear, obesity, carrying heavy weight habitually, arthritis, tarsal coalition, tight calf muscles, and being made to walk too early.

Corrective measures: walking, standing and jumping on the toes and heels in all four directions; skipping rope; picking up marbles with the toes; writing in sand with the toes; the yoga asanas Adhomukhsavasana and Vajrasana; and therapeutic massage.

Kyphosis (Hunch Back)

Kyphosis is an exaggerated forward rounding of the upper (thoracic) back. …
