Q.Four compounds are given, labelled A, B, C and D. A is a benzene ring bearing an -OH group joined directly to the ring carbon (phenol, C6H5OH). B is a benzene ring bearing a -CH2OH side chain (benzyl alcohol, C6H5CH2OH). C is a benzene ring bearing a -CH2OH side chain together with a -CH3 group at the meta position (3-methylbenzyl alcohol). D is a benzene ring bearing an -OH group joined directly to the ring together with a -CH3 group at the meta position (3-methylphenol, m-cresol). Which of the given compounds is/are an aromatic alcohol?
(i) A, B, C, D
(ii) A, D
(iii) B, C
(iv) A

When -OH is bonded directly to the aromatic ring, the compound is a phenol, not an alcohol. Here B and C are aromatic alcohols; A and D are phenols.
Concept
Alcohols have -OH on an sp3 (saturated) carbon; phenols have -OH on an sp2 carbon of the aromatic ring. An aromatic alcohol simply means an alcohol whose carbon skeleton includes an aromatic ring (the classic case is benzyl alcohol, C6H5-CH2-OH).
Classifying each compound
- A: C6H5OH - the -OH is on a ring carbon -> this is phenol (aromatic, but a phenol, not an alcohol).
- B: C6H5CH2OH - the -OH is on the benzylic -CH2- carbon -> aromatic (benzylic) alcohol.
- C: 3-methyl-C6H4-CH2OH - again -OH is on a -CH2- side chain -> aromatic alcohol; the extra ring methyl does not change the class. …
