Balance of Trade vs Balance of Payments
Although the two terms are related, they are not the same thing — BOT is only one line item inside the much wider BOP.
| Basis | Balance of Trade (BOT) | Balance of Payments (BOP) |
|---|---|---|
| Scope | Records only visible items — export and import of goods | Records visible + invisible items + capital transactions — the full external-sector picture |
| Nature | Narrower concept | Wider, comprehensive concept |
| Components | One figure only | Current Account + Capital Account + Official Reserve Account |
| Can it be in deficit/surplus? | Yes, and it need not balance | Individual accounts can show surplus/deficit, but the BOP as a whole always balances on a double-entry accounting basis |
| Relationship | BOT is a part of the Current Account of the BOP | BOP is the larger, all-inclusive statement that BOT feeds into |
