Types of Distribution Channels: The Direct Channel (Zero-Level)

Distribution channels are classified according to the number of independent middlemen — or "levels" — that stand between the manufacturer and the final consumer. The simplest possible channel has no middleman at all. This is called the direct channel, or the zero-level channel, because the goods pass in a single step: Manufacturer to Consumer, with nobody in between.

In a zero-level channel, the manufacturer takes full responsibility for getting the product to the consumer. Common real-world forms of this channel include door-to-door selling (a company's own salespeople visiting homes to sell directly, as is common with some cosmetics and kitchenware brands), company-owned retail outlets or showrooms (where a manufacturer opens its own shop instead of selling through an independent retailer), direct mail-order or catalogue selling, and, increasingly today, direct selling through a manufacturer's own website or app. In every one of these forms, the manufacturer and the consumer deal with each other with no independent trader standing in between and taking a separate margin.

The direct channel has clear advantages. Because there is no middleman, the manufacturer keeps full control over how the product is priced, displayed, and explained to the customer, and receives customer feedback and complaints first-hand and immediately, without any distortion. It usually also means a higher margin per unit for the manufacturer, since no intermediary's profit has to be paid out of the selling price. This channel suits products that are highly specialised, made-to-order, technical (needing the manufacturer's own staff to explain or install them), or highly perishable, where speed and direct control matter more than wide reach. …
