A profession is an occupation needing special education and training in which personal expert services are given for a fee, and it is regulated by the code of conduct of a professional association.

Human economic activities are of three kinds — business, profession and employment. Profession is an occupation in which a person applies his specialised knowledge, skill and training to render personal services to others. Its main points are:

1. Special qualification and training — a professional must acquire expert knowledge and often a recognised degree or membership (for example, a doctor, lawyer, chartered accountant or engineer).
2. Reward is a fee — the return for a profession is called a fee, not profit or wages.
