When a contract is broken, the injured party can claim damages (monetary compensation); the Indian Contract Act recognises several types — ordinary, special, exemplary, nominal and liquidated damages.

Damages are the monetary compensation awarded to the injured party for the loss suffered due to a breach of contract. The main types are:

  1. Ordinary (General) damages — compensation for the loss that arises naturally and directly in the ordinary course of things from the breach.
  2. Special damages — compensation for loss arising from special circumstances that were made known to the other party at the time of making the contract.
