Udyam Registration is the standard route by which a business formally becomes recognised as an MSME.

Udyam Registration is the current official registration mechanism for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises in India, introduced by the Government of India with effect from 1 July 2020. It is entirely online and based on self-declaration, meaning the entrepreneur enters basic details of the enterprise — such as Aadhaar and PAN details and figures for investment and turnover — without needing to upload supporting documents at the time of registration; these details are verified later against government tax records. On successful registration, the enterprise receives an Udyam Registration Certificate with a unique Udyam Registration Number, which is the enterprise's proof of its MSME status and classification, and is generally required to access most MSME-specific government support and benefits.

Some students confuse Udyam Registration with GST registration since both are online — but Udyam Registration specifically establishes MSME status and category, which GST registration does not do.
