Itinerant (Mobile) Retailers

Itinerant, or mobile, retailers are traders who carry on their business without any permanent, fixed shop. Instead of waiting for customers to come to a shop, an itinerant retailer moves to wherever customers are — from street to street, house to house, or place to place. This form of retailing needs very little capital to start, and is common across both towns and villages in Tamil Nadu and the rest of India for goods that are inexpensive, needed frequently, and easy to carry.

Hawkers and Peddlers are itinerant retailers who carry a limited stock of goods — fruit, vegetables, small household items, toys, snacks — on foot, on a cycle, or on a small handcart, and sell directly to customers by calling out or moving door to door. They generally deal in low-value, everyday items and rely on personal contact and convenience (bringing the goods right to the customer's doorstep) rather than an assembled range or a fixed location.

Market Traders occupy a temporary stall or spot in a marketplace, but only on the fixed days that market is held — a weekly market day, for instance. On other days the trader may not be present in that same place at all, or may set up in a different market elsewhere. The trader thus has neither a permanent shop nor even a permanent daily presence, but does have a fixed, known spot on the days the market operates, so regular customers know where to find them.

Cheap-Jacks occupy an actual shop, but only for a short, temporary period in one locality — perhaps taking a vacant shop for a season or a few weeks, often to sell off a particular stock at attractively low prices — and then move on to another locality once that stock is cleared or the period ends. A cheap-jack therefore sits between a fully fixed shopkeeper and a fully mobile hawker: fixed for a short while, but never permanently rooted in one place. …
