By period, business finance is long-term (over 5 years), medium-term (1-5 years) or short-term (under 1 year).

In the Tamil Nadu HSC Class-11 Commerce syllabus, sources of business finance can be classified in several ways; on the basis of period they fall into three groups:

  1. Long-term finance — needed for a period of more than five years, mainly to buy fixed assets like land, buildings and machinery. Sources: equity shares, preference shares, debentures, long-term loans from financial institutions, and retained earnings (ploughing back of profits).
