(b) ICT is used in economics through spreadsheets, statistical/econometric software, databases and e-governance, economic modelling and forecasting, and digital transactions and e-commerce.
(a) Role of Small-Scale Industries (SSI) in economic development
- Employment generation — SSIs are labour-intensive and, next to agriculture, are among the largest sources of employment, creating more jobs per unit of capital than large industries.
- Equitable distribution of income and wealth — ownership is widely dispersed, so SSIs help spread income among many people and reduce inequality.
- Balanced regional development — SSIs can be set up in rural and backward areas, reducing regional imbalances and checking migration to cities.
- Mobilisation of local capital and skills — they use local savings, resources and entrepreneurial talent that might otherwise remain idle, and promote entrepreneurship.
- Low capital requirement — they need less capital and short gestation, suiting a capital-scarce, labour-surplus economy like India.
- Support to large industries (ancillary role) — many SSIs supply parts, components and services to large industries.
- Contribution to exports — SSIs produce a significant share of the country's manufactured exports (handicrafts, garments, leather, etc.), earning foreign exchange.
- Production of consumer goods — they meet local demand for a wide variety of consumer goods.
(b) Ideas of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) used in Economics
- Spreadsheets (MS Excel): used to tabulate economic data, perform statistical calculations (totals, averages, percentages, index numbers) and draw graphs and charts.
- Statistical and econometric software: packages such as SPSS, R, STATA and EViews are used for analysing data, testing hypotheses and estimating relationships.
- Databases and e-governance: electronic databases and government portals (RBI, MOSPI, NSSO, Census) allow large-scale collection, storage and retrieval of economic data.
- Economic modelling and forecasting: computers are used to build economic models, run simulations and make forecasts using big-data analytics. …
