Binary has base 2 (digits 0-1), octal has base 8 (digits 0-7), and hexadecimal has base 16 (digits 0-9 and A-F).

The idea. In a positional number system, the base (or radix) is the number of distinct symbols (digits) the system uses — and it is also the factor by which the value of each position grows as you move left. In base r, a digit in the n-th position (counting from 0 at the right) is worth digit x r^n. That is why the same system is named by its base.

The three systems asked

Number systemBase valueDigits availableExample
Binary20, 1(1011)2 = 1x8 + 0x4 + 1x2 + 1x1 = (11)10
Octal80, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7(17)8 = 1x8 + 7x1 = (15)10
Hexadecimal160–9 plus A, B, C, D, E, F (values 10–15)(1F)16 = 1x16 + 15x1 = (31)10

Notes worth remembering:

  • The base is always written as a subscript to avoid ambiguity: (101)2 is five, but (101)10 is a hundred and one.
  • Hexadecimal needs letters because a single symbol must exist for every value from 0 to 15 — so A stands for 10 up through F for 15.
  • Since 8 = 2x2x2 and 16 = 2x2x2x2, one octal digit packs exactly 3 binary bits and one hex digit packs exactly 4 — the reason programmers use octal/hex as compact shorthand for binary.
Tip

"Bi/Oct/Hex" — the names themselves encode the bases (bi = 2, octa = 8, hexadeca = 16); the highest digit in any base is always (base − 1).

✓Final answer

Base values: binary = 2, octal = 8, hexadecimal = 16.
