Section 6.5.1 notes that "confusion surrounds the precise meaning of the terms overweight, overfat, and obese," since each term can shift meaning with context. Medically, "overweight" refers to "a body weight that exceeds some average for stature, and perhaps age, usually by some standard deviation unit or percentage." It frequently - but not always - accompanies increased body fat (the text notes male power athletes as an exception: heavy but not necessarily overfat). "Obesity" refers to "individuals at the extreme of the overweight continuum," and specifically to the overfat condition accompanied by comorbidities including "glucose intolerance, type 2 diabetes, hypertension, increased risk of coronary heart disease and cancer" - collectively the "obese syndrome."
