Apical dominance is the suppression of lateral bud growth by the terminal bud, caused by auxin produced at the shoot apex; removing the apex releases the lateral buds.

In most plants, the shoot apex (terminal bud) grows vigorously while the lateral (axillary) buds along the stem remain dormant or grow only weakly as long as the apical bud is intact and healthy. This control of lateral bud growth by the apical bud is called apical dominance.

The underlying mechanism is hormonal: the apical bud is a rich site of auxin (indole-3-acetic acid, IAA) synthesis. Auxin moves basipetally (downward) through the stem and inhibits the growth of the axillary buds below, keeping them dormant.
