Molar Mass

Molar mass is defined as the mass of one mole of a substance. Numerically, the molar mass of a compound equals the sum of the relative atomic masses of its constituent atoms (i.e. the relative molecular mass computed in Section 1.3.2) -- the only difference is that molar mass carries the unit g mol⁻¹, while relative atomic/molecular mass is a pure (unitless) ratio expressed in u.

  • Relative atomic mass of one hydrogen atom = 1.008 u → molar mass of hydrogen atoms = 1.008 g mol⁻¹
