DDT is made by condensing chlorobenzene with chloral using conc. H2SO4; chloropicrin is made by heating chloroform with conc. nitric acid.
- Preparation of DDT (p,p'-dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane): DDT is prepared by the condensation of two molecules of chlorobenzene with one molecule of chloral (trichloroacetaldehyde, CCl3CHO) in the presence of concentrated sulphuric acid (as a dehydrating agent/catalyst): 2 C6H5Cl + CCl3CHO --(conc. H2SO4)--> Cl-C6H4-CH(CCl3)-C6H4-Cl + H2O The product is p,p'-DDT, once widely used as an insecticide.
- Preparation of Chloropicrin (trichloronitromethane, CCl3NO2): …
