Sunlight (mostly visible and UV radiation) passes through the Earth's atmosphere and is absorbed by the land and oceans, warming the surface. The warmed Earth then re-emits this energy back out as longer-wavelength infrared (heat) radiation.
Certain atmospheric gases — called greenhouse gases, including carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), water vapour, nitrous oxide (N2O), and chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) — are able to absorb this outgoing infrared radiation (rather than letting it escape directly to space) and then re-radiate part of it back towards the Earth's surface. This traps heat within the lower atmosphere, in a manner loosely analogous to how a glass greenhouse retains warmth, hence the name "Greenhouse effect".
