Quality Certification Marks and the Alert Consumer
One of the simplest ways a consumer can exercise the right to information and the right to safety at the same time is by checking for standard quality-certification marks before buying a product. These marks are issued by recognised government or government-backed certification bodies in India after testing a product against defined quality and safety standards; a product carrying the mark has been checked against those standards, while one without it has not been verified in the same way.
| Mark | Applies To | What It Certifies |
|---|---|---|
| ISI Mark | Industrial and electrical products (wires, cables, pressure cookers, helmets, cement, and similar items) | The product meets the relevant Indian quality and safety standard for that category |
| Agmark | Agricultural produce (grains, pulses, spices, ghee, honey, and similar items) | The produce meets prescribed grading and quality standards for agricultural commodities |
| Hallmark | Gold and silver jewellery | The purity/fineness of the precious metal matches what is stated |
| FPO Mark | Processed fruit and vegetable products (jams, squashes, pickles, and similar items) | The product has been processed and packaged under prescribed hygiene and quality conditions |
