Air pollution takes several forms — gaseous pollutants, particulate (solid) pollutants, indoor air pollution, and secondary pollutants like smog — mainly from vehicles, industries and the burning of fuels.

Air pollution means the presence of harmful gases, dust and other substances in the air in quantities that are injurious to health and the environment. Its main types are:

1. Gaseous air pollution

  • Caused by harmful gases such as carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, sulphur dioxide, nitrogen oxides and hydrocarbons.
  • Released mainly by vehicles, factories and the burning of fossil fuels.

2. Particulate air pollution

  • Caused by tiny solid and liquid particles in the air — dust, smoke, soot, fly ash and fumes.
  • Comes from industries, construction, mining and burning of coal and wood.

3. Indoor air pollution

  • Pollution inside homes and buildings from cooking fuels (firewood, kerosene), smoke, tobacco and household chemicals.
  • Especially harmful to women and children in rural households.

4. Secondary pollution (smog and acid formation)

  • Formed when primary pollutants react in the atmosphere, producing smog and contributing to acid rain. …
