Meaning and Significance of National Income

National income is the total money value of all final goods and services produced by the normal residents of a country during a given accounting year, usually a financial year. It is the single most important summary measure of a nation's overall economic performance — it tells us how much an economy has produced, how large the flow of income to its factors of production has been, and how much is available for consumption and investment.

Because it is a flow measured over a period (a year), national income is always stated as an amount per year — for example, ₹2,00,000 crore in 2023–24 — never as a stock held at a single point in time. The concept rests on a fundamental identity of macroeconomics: for the economy as a whole, the value of output produced, the income earned by the factors that produced it, and the expenditure incurred on buying it are all equal. This three-way equality is precisely why national income can be measured by three different methods (Section 3) that must, in principle, give the same total.

Note

Normal residents, not citizens

National income counts the production of a country's normal residents — individuals or institutions whose centre of economic interest lies within the country — regardless of nationality. A foreign company's factory operating in India contributes to India's domestic product, while an Indian professional working abroad earns income that is added back through net factor income from abroad. This distinction is the key to separating domestic aggregates (GDP) from national aggregates (GNP), covered next.

This chapter follows the standard macroeconomic treatment of national-income aggregates that is taught nationally; the Tamil Nadu HSC syllabus draws on the same principles.

Definition 1Final Goods

Goods purchased for final use (consumption or investment) and not for resale or further processing within the same year. Only final goods are counted in national income; intermediate goods are excluded to avoid double counting.

Definition 2Flow Variable

A quantity measured over a period of time, such as national income during a year. It is contrasted with a stock, which is measured at a point in time (e.g. national wealth).

Definition 3Accounting Year

The twelve-month period (in India, 1 April to 31 March) over which national income is measured and reported.
