Round Shoulders, Lordosis, Kyphosis and Scoliosis are postural deformities of the shoulders and spine. Round Shoulders (forward-drawn shoulders) is corrected mainly through Chakrasana and Dhanurasana; Lordosis (an exaggerated inward curve of the lower back) through Dhanurasana and Halasana; Kyphosis (an exaggerated forward curve of the upper back) through Dhanurasana, Chakrasana and Bhujangasana; and Scoliosis (a sideways curve of the spine) through Trikonasana and Adhomukhasana, alongside targeted exercises and, in severe cases, bracing or surgery.

Round Shoulders

Round Shoulders is a deformity in which the shoulders are bent forward out of their ideal alignment, narrowing the curve of the upper back. If uncorrected, it can progress into hyperkyphosis (hunch back) and a forward head posture, and in the long run may lead to chronic neck pain or thoracic outlet syndrome.

Causes: poor posture habits, especially prolonged use of smartphones, tablets and computers, and long hours of driving; heredity; muscle imbalance; wearing tight clothes; injury; and disease.

Corrective measures: chest stretches, the T-stretch, wall stretch, handclasp stretch, planks, pull-ups, and the reverse shoulder stretch; consciously keeping the spine straight; and the yoga asanas Chakrasana and Dhanurasana.

Lordosis (Sway Back)

Lordosis is a reduction in the normal angle of the lower back's arc, producing an exaggerated concavity (hollow) in the lumbar region.

Causes: obesity, improper muscle development, muscular or skeletal disease or accident, poor posture, and malnutrition. It is common in children because the muscles around the hip weaken or tighten during growth, and usually resolves on its own as the child grows.

Corrective measures: braces or surgery in severe cases; weight loss; daily physical therapy; sit-ups; sitting against a wall and pushing the trunk backward against it; lying down and raising the upper body and legs together; a balanced diet; and the yoga asanas Dhanurasana and Halasana.

Kyphosis (Hunch Back)

Kyphosis is an exaggerated forward rounding of the upper (thoracic) back — the name comes from the Greek 'kyphos', meaning bent or bowed.

Causes: heredity, ageing, disease such as arthritis or osteoporosis, malnutrition, habitually pulling heavy weights, using unstable furniture, poor postural habits, and weak back muscles. It is most common in older women, though it can also appear in infants or teenagers due to spinal malformation.

Corrective measures: back-strengthening and flexibility exercises, physical therapy, swimming, gym-ball exercises, resistance-band work, sleeping on a flat bed with a thin pillow, and the yoga asanas Dhanurasana, Chakrasana and Bhujangasana.
