Paschimottanasana

3.2.7

Paschimottanasana

This asana is described in full in section 3.1.6 (Paschimottanasana) above - its procedure, breathing awareness, benefits and contraindications are the same wherever it is practised. The CBSE Class 12 Physical Education syllabus lists Paschimottanasana again here because it is one of the asanas recommended for this specific lifestyle disease; refer to section 3.1.6 for the complete method and the posture diagram.

Why Paschimottanasana helps manage diabetes

The deep forward fold compresses the abdomen against the thighs, squeezing the pancreas, liver, spleen and intestines in sequence as the torso folds down. This mechanical pressure, combined with the slow, deep breathing held in the final position, is believed to improve blood flow to the pancreas and encourage better insulin activity, while the lengthened exhalation calms the nervous system, important because stress hormones such as cortisol can themselves raise blood-sugar levels.

Specific benefits for a person managing diabetes

  • Massages and tones the pancreas along with the liver, kidneys and intestines, supporting healthier glucose regulation.
  • Improves the secretions of the intra-abdominal glands, which assist digestion and nutrient absorption.
  • Calms the mind and lowers stress, reducing stress-related spikes in blood sugar.
  • A good counter-pose after the back-bends (Dhanurasana, Ushtrasana) used elsewhere in the diabetes sequence, balancing the spine in the opposite direction.
