Biological Importance of Lipids

Lipids serve a wide range of biological roles. (1) Lipids are an integral component of the cell membrane and are necessary for the structural integrity of the cell. (2) The main function of triglycerides in animals is to act as an energy reserve, and they yield more energy than either carbohydrates or proteins. (3) Lipids act as a protective coating in aquatic organisms. (4) Lipids present in connective tissue give protection to internal organs.
