The coordination number (C.N.) of a complex is defined as the total number of ligand donor atoms directly attached to the central metal atom or ion via coordinate (dative) bonds. For monodentate ligands (one donor atom each, e.g. , , ), the coordination number simply equals the number of ligands — e.g. has 6 ligands, so C.N. = 6.
