Sustainable development means meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. It combines growth with conservation, keeping the environmental resource base intact across generations.

Definition

The most widely used definition, given by the Brundtland Commission, states:

Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present generation without compromising the ability of the future generation to meet their own needs.

Key features

  • Intergenerational equity. It emphasises fairness between generations — the present generation should hand over an environment and resource base that is at least as good as the one it inherited.
  • Sustaining the resource base. Sustainable development requires that the stock of natural resources and the quality of the environment be maintained over time, not exhausted for short-term gains.
  • Balancing growth and conservation. It seeks economic growth and improved living standards, but in a way that does not degrade the environment or deplete resources.
