The Consumer Price Index (CPI) is a weighted average of price relatives R=P1P0×100R=\tfrac{P_1}{P_0}\times100 for the items in a household's consumption basket. With ∑WR=9786.85\sum WR = 9786.85 and ∑W=100\sum W = 100, the CPI is 97.86.

Concept first

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) measures the average change in the retail prices of a fixed basket of goods and services consumed by a specified group. Each item's price relative is weighted by its share WW in total consumption:

CPI=∑WR∑W,R=P1P0×100\text{CPI} = \frac{\sum W R}{\sum W},\qquad R = \frac{P_1}{P_0}\times 100
