Sectoral composition shows how the three sectors — primary, secondary and tertiary — divide up the economy's total output. A rising services share is not automatically good: it is healthy when it grows on top of strong agriculture and industry, but hollow if farming and manufacturing remain underdeveloped.

The concept of sectoral composition

An economy's total output (GDP) is produced by three broad sectors:

  • Primary sector — agriculture, forestry, fishing and other activities that draw directly on nature.
  • Secondary sector — industry and manufacturing, which transform raw materials into finished goods.
  • Tertiary sector — services such as trade, transport, banking, education and health.

The sectoral composition is the relative contribution (share) of each of these sectors to the economy's total output. Studying it tells us how the economy is structured and how that structure changes as the country develops.

Should services contribute the maximum? — a comment

The answer is no, not necessarily. Whether a large services share is desirable depends on how it has come about.

  • In a developed economy, the tertiary sector does contribute the largest share — but only because agriculture and industry have already become highly productive, releasing resources and demand into services. Here a big services share reflects genuine progress.
  • In a developing economy, a large services share can be misleading or even unhealthy if it grows while the primary and secondary sectors remain weak. If a country still cannot feed itself or produce enough industrial goods, a swelling services sector rests on a fragile base; it may reflect distress or an unbalanced structure rather than strength. …
