The idea. Natural Language Processing (NLP) enables computers to understand spoken/written human language and to produce it. For a person whose sight, hearing, speech or movement is impaired, NLP effectively substitutes the missing channel with another one. This is an explore-type activity, so the following is a model survey of real, widely used examples.
For the visually impaired
- Screen readers with text-to-speech (TalkBack on Android, VoiceOver on iPhone, NVDA/JAWS on PCs) read out everything on screen — books, websites, messages — enabling independent use of computers and phones.
- Audio description and OCR-plus-TTS apps photograph printed text (letters, labels, signboards) and read it aloud.
For the hearing impaired
- Speech-to-text / live captioning (e.g. automatic captions in video calls and lectures, Live Transcribe) converts surrounding speech into instantly readable text.
- Automatic subtitling of videos and phone-call transcription make audio media accessible.
- Research systems translate between sign language and text/speech in both directions.
For people with motor/physical disabilities
- Voice assistants (Google Assistant, Alexa, Siri) allow full hands-free operation — making calls, typing messages by dictation, switching lights/fans/TV — for users who cannot use hands, keyboards or switches.
- Voice-controlled wheelchairs and home automation extend the same principle to mobility and the living environment.
