PRICE's five steps — Protection, Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation — described one by one.

PRICE is the first-aid protocol for the immediate management of soft-tissue injuries (sprains, strains, bruises). Its five steps:

  1. Protection (P) — protect the injured part from any further stress or damage; stop the activity and support the part.
  2. Rest (R) — rest the injured part, avoiding movement and weight-bearing so healing can begin and the injury is not made worse.
  3. Ice (I) — apply a cold pack (wrapped in cloth) for short periods; cold narrows blood vessels and reduces swelling, bleeding and pain. Never place ice directly on bare skin.
  4. Compression (C) — wrap a firm elastic bandage around the part to limit swelling and provide support; avoid wrapping so tightly that circulation is cut off. …
