Q.What is Evaluation?

Assessment Cycle Components — A First Look

Imagine you're a teacher. You teach a chapter on quadratic equations. At the end, you give a test. Some students score well, some don't. What do you do next?

If you just move to the next chapter, you've missed the point. The test wasn't the end — it was a checkpoint. The real work begins when you look at those scores and ask: Why did some students struggle? Was my explanation unclear? Did I give enough practice? Then you adjust your teaching, re-teach the weak areas, and test again.

That loop — teach → test → reflect → adjust → teach again — is the assessment cycle.

The Precise Statement

The Assessment Cycle is a structured, continuous process of gathering evidence about student learning, interpreting that evidence, and using it to improve both teaching and learning. It has four core components:

1. Planning — Deciding what to assess, why, and how.
2. Gathering Evidence — Collecting data through tests, assignments, observations, or discussions.
3. Interpreting Evidence — Making sense of the data: what does it tell you about student understanding?
4. Taking Action — Using the interpretation to modify instruction, provide feedback, or redesign the assessment itself.

These four steps repeat in a loop — not a straight line.

Why This Matters for Exams

In Indian exam preparation, students often treat assessments as one-time events: "I wrote the test, I got my marks, done." But the assessment cycle says: the marks are just raw data. The real learning happens when you interpret why you lost marks and take action — revise that topic, practice that type of question, change your approach.
