Anuloma-Viloma is alternate-nostril breathing; it balances the breath, calms the mind and improves lung function.

Procedure:

  • Sit in a comfortable meditative posture with the spine erect and body relaxed.
  • Using the right hand, close the right nostril with the thumb and inhale slowly through the left nostril (Puraka).
  • Close the left nostril, and exhale slowly through the right nostril (Rechaka).
  • Now inhale through the right, then close it and exhale through the left. This completes one round.
  • Repeat for several rounds, keeping the breath smooth, silent and unforced; retention (Kumbhaka) may be added gently with practice.
