The candidate answers 7 questions with at most 5 from each group of 6, so the split (Group I, Group II) must be (5,2),(4,3),(3,4),(2,5)(5,2),(4,3),(3,4),(2,5). Summing the cases gives 780780 ways.

Valid splits

Let the candidate take aa questions from Group I and bb from Group II, with

a+b=7,a≤5,b≤5.a+b=7,\qquad a\le 5,\qquad b\le 5.

b≤5b\le 5 gives a≥2a\ge 2 and a≤5a\le 5 gives b≥2b\ge 2, so a∈{2,3,4,5}a\in\{2,3,4,5\}. The allowed splits are (5,2),(4,3),(3,4),(2,5)(5,2),(4,3),(3,4),(2,5).

Counting each split

Each group has 6 questions:

  • (5,2): (65)(62)=6×15=90(5,2):\ \binom{6}{5}\binom{6}{2}=6\times 15=90
  • (4,3): (64)(63)=15×20=300(4,3):\ \binom{6}{4}\binom{6}{3}=15\times 20=300 …
