Concept
When a shareholder fails to pay the amount due on a call, the unpaid amount is Calls in Arrears — the debit balance of the call account. Where the company maintains a Calls in Arrears Account, the shortfall is debited to it so that the full amount due can still be credited to the call account (closing it), while Bank is debited only with the cash actually received.
Working Notes
- Face value ₹10 = ₹2.50 (application) + ₹3 (allotment) + ₹2 (first call) + ₹2.50 (second and final call, the balance).
- Application: 10,000 × ₹2.50 = ₹25,000.
- Allotment: 10,000 × ₹3 = ₹30,000.
- First call: 10,000 × ₹2 = ₹20,000.
- Second and final call due: 10,000 × ₹2.50 = ₹25,000.
- Received on 9,900 shares: 9,900 × ₹2.50 = ₹24,750; arrears on 100 shares: 100 × ₹2.50 = ₹250.
