Formal communication uses official channels and rules; informal communication (grapevine) uses social relationships.

Four differences between formal and informal communication:

  1. Channel / route — Formal communication flows through the officially prescribed channels and chain of command. Informal communication flows through unofficial, social channels (the grapevine) that cut across the hierarchy.

  2. Basis — Formal communication is based on organisational rules, positions and the formal structure. Informal communication is based on personal relationships, friendship and social contact among members.

  3. Speed — Formal communication is comparatively slow as it follows set routes. Informal communication is very fast because messages spread freely from person to person.
