Communication flows: sender encodes → message sent through a channel → receiver decodes → feedback.

Four steps involved in the communication process:

  1. Encoding by the sender — The sender (source) has an idea to convey and converts it into a set of words, symbols or signs (encoding) so that it can be understood by the receiver.

  2. Transmission of the message through a medium/channel — The encoded message is passed on through a suitable channel or medium, such as spoken words, a letter, email, telephone or face-to-face talk, to reach the receiver.

  3. Decoding by the receiver — The receiver gets the message and interprets it, i.e. converts the symbols back into meaning (decoding). Effective communication requires that the receiver understands the message in the same sense in which the sender meant it.
