Barriers can be overcome by clarifying the idea, communicating to the receiver's level, using simple language, taking feedback, listening well and conveying things of value with consistency.

Six measures to overcome barriers to effective communication:

  1. Clarify the idea before communicating — The sender should be clear in his own mind about what he wants to convey. A well-thought-out and clearly-defined message is understood easily and avoids confusion.

  2. Communicate according to the needs of the receiver — The sender should keep in mind the level of understanding, knowledge and education of the receiver and adjust the language and content accordingly, so that the message is grasped.

  3. Use simple and clear language — Technical jargon, difficult or ambiguous words should be avoided. Using simple, familiar and precise language removes semantic (language) barriers and ensures the message means the same to both parties.

  4. Ensure proper feedback — The sender should encourage the receiver to respond, ask questions and confirm his understanding. Feedback tells the sender whether the message has been received and understood correctly, and allows errors to be corrected.

  5. Be a good listener — Both sender and receiver should listen attentively and patiently, without interrupting or being distracted. Good listening ensures the message is fully received and shows respect, improving mutual understanding.
