Importance of Management

Why Management Matters

Management is not an end in itself — it exists to help an organisation achieve its goals. Its importance stems from the fact that every organisation, whether a small shop or a large corporation, needs management to function effectively. The textbook highlights five key reasons that make management indispensable.

1. Management Helps in Achieving Group Goals

  • An organisation is a collection of individuals with different personal interests.
  • Without management, these individual efforts would be scattered and uncoordinated.
  • The manager’s task is to give common direction to everyone’s work so that the overall organisational goal is achieved.
  • Management is required not for its own sake, but to ensure that the group works as one unit toward a shared objective.

2. Management Increases Efficiency

  • The aim of a manager is to reduce costs and increase productivity.
  • This is done through the five functions of management:
    • Planning – deciding what to do and how to do it.
    • Organising – arranging resources and tasks.
    • Staffing – hiring and training the right people.
    • Directing – guiding and motivating employees.
    • Controlling – checking performance and correcting deviations.
  • By using resources (money, materials, time, people) wisely, management ensures that the organisation gets the best possible output with minimum waste.

3. Management Creates a Dynamic Organisation

  • All organisations operate in an environment that is constantly changing — new technology, shifting customer preferences, government policies, competition, etc.
  • People naturally resist change because it means leaving a familiar, secure situation for a newer, more challenging one.
  • Management helps employees adapt to change smoothly.
  • This ability to change and respond keeps the organisation competitive and prevents it from becoming outdated.

4. Management Helps in Achieving Personal Objectives

  • Employees have their own personal goals — salary, recognition, career growth, job satisfaction.
  • A good manager motivates and leads the team so that individuals can achieve their personal goals while also contributing to the organisation’s objectives.
  • Through motivation and leadership, management builds:
    • Team spirit – a sense of belonging and cooperation.
    • Commitment – dedication to the group’s success.
  • This alignment of personal and organisational goals benefits both the employee and the company.

5. Management Helps in the Development of Society

  • An organisation has multiple objectives — it must serve the interests of owners, employees, customers, suppliers, and the community.
  • In fulfilling all these objectives, management contributes to society’s development in several ways:
    • Good quality products and services – meeting customer needs.
    • Employment opportunities – creating jobs for people.
    • Adoption of new technology – for the greater good of the people.
    • Growth and development – leading the path toward a better standard of living.
  • Thus, effective management does not just benefit the organisation — it uplifts the entire society.
