Centralisation concentrates decision-making authority at the top; decentralisation disperses it to lower levels.

Four differences between centralisation and decentralisation:

  1. Meaning / location of authority — In centralisation, the power to take decisions is retained by top management. In decentralisation, decision-making authority is systematically delegated down to middle and lower levels.

  2. Speed of decisions — Centralisation slows decisions because matters must go up to the top; decentralisation speeds decisions as they are taken at the level where the problem arises.

  3. Degree of control vs freedom — Centralisation gives top management tight, direct control; decentralisation gives lower-level managers more freedom and initiative, with control exercised through accountability.
