Centralisation concentrates authority at the top; decentralisation disperses it to lower levels.

Four differences between centralisation and decentralisation:

  1. Location of authority — In centralisation, decision-making authority is retained by top management. In decentralisation, authority is systematically delegated down to middle and lower levels.

  2. Speed of decisions — Centralisation makes decisions slower because matters must travel up to the top. Decentralisation makes decisions faster, as they are taken at the level where the issue arises.

  3. Degree of control vs freedom — Centralisation gives top management tight, direct control. Decentralisation gives lower-level managers greater freedom and initiative, with control maintained through accountability.
