The NCERT Class 12 Business Studies textbook explains that planning is a mental exercise that involves looking ahead and anticipating future events. No one can predict the future with perfect accuracy, especially in a dynamic business environment. But that does not mean planning is pointless. Instead, planning must be built on flexibility. A good plan includes room for adjustments, alternative courses of action, and periodic reviews. For example, a company might plan its annual production target but also build in a quarterly review to adjust for unexpected shifts in demand.
The textbook specifically mentions that planning cannot foresee everything, but it reduces uncertainty by forcing managers to think systematically about the future. Even if the environment changes, the habit of planning helps an organisation respond faster.
Another important point is that planning provides direction. Even when the environment shifts, having a clear set of goals helps a business decide what to change and what to keep.
